Rockingham Detention Center Release Paths
The official Detention Center page identifies this as Rockingham County's adult jail. It holds people awaiting trial and people serving short misdemeanor sentences. A magistrate or court may authorize a bond release. A case can also end in dismissal, or a person may leave after completing a local sentence. In each situation, the jail carries out the custody action, but the court file explains the legal event. A felony judgment can instead send the person into the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction system.
Leaving this jail does not always mean entering the community. Staff transport people to court and prison units. Another county, a hospital, the U.S. Marshals Service, or immigration authorities may also become the next custodian. Ask for both the release date and the release destination or type. The receiving-agency entry is often the key to the next search. A transfer closes Rockingham County custody while another form of custody continues.
| County record entry | What it usually means | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or unsecured release | Pretrial jail custody ended; the case may remain open | Rockingham court case |
| Time served or sentence complete | The local custodial term ended | Other holds and supervision |
| Transfer to NCDAC | State custody began elsewhere | NCDAC offender record |
| Transfer to another agency | County custody ended, but custody may continue | Named receiving agency |
Confirm Rockingham Detention Center Releases
Start with the detention center because Rockingham County does not publish an official online jail roster or recent-release archive. Call with the full legal name, date of birth, and an approximate booking date. Ask whether the person is now confined. If not, ask whether staff can confirm the departure date and whether the event was a community release or a transfer. A missing online name cannot answer those questions because there is no verified county list whose retention rules can be measured.
If telephone disclosure is limited, seek the named booking and release record. Then compare the record with the court case. Use a statewide or federal locator only when the facts support that custody class. The Rockingham County released inmate search lays out the cross-system path, but the following order keeps this booking tied to its true custodian.
- Call the jail at 336-634-3236 and identify the booking as closely as possible.
- Ask for the date and time custody ended, the release code or authority, and any receiving agency.
- Request the existing booking and release sheet from Sheriff Records when more detail is needed.
- Read the Rockingham court docket for the bond order, judgment, dismissal, or commitment behind the event.
- Search NCDAC, BOP, or ICE only if the release destination or case history points there.
Note: A court order may authorize release before staff complete the physical discharge, so the jail timestamp remains the best proof of departure.
Rockingham Detention Release Records
The county release record is usually part of the jail's booking-management file, not a stand-alone certificate on a public portal. Request the booking summary, release screen, release sheet, or custody history for one named booking. The Sheriff's records function maintains incident records and public information. Ask for existing fields, not a custom account of what happened. A narrow request is easier to match and reduces the risk of mixing two bookings or two people with similar names.
Useful fields include the booked name, booking number, arresting agency, admission timestamp, charges, court numbers, bond terms, release timestamp, release reason or authority, and receiving agency when a transfer occurred. A booking photograph may be stored or reviewed apart from the operational record, so name it separately if it is needed for a lawful personal or court-related purpose. Court records can confirm the legal result, but they may not carry the time the person crossed the jail door.

The official records page lists paper copies at eight cents per page, payable in cash. It does not promise a special release-record turnaround or publish a distinct electronic fee. Ask for electronic delivery and identify one booking by full name, birth date, approximate date, and booking number if known.
A useful request asks for the booking and release record for the named person and date, including booking number, admission date and time, release date and time, release disposition, charges, and the receiving agency if transferred. If part cannot be produced, ask for the rest with protected material redacted and for the legal basis that applies to the withheld part. The clerk, Sheriff, and NCDAC each keep different records. Sending the same broad request to all three can blur the answer instead of improving it.
The official Rockingham County Judicial Center page identifies the local court source that can corroborate the release authority.

The court source explains the case action, while the detention record supplies the physical release time and destination.
Rockingham Detention Center Facts
The current jail stands in the Sheriff's Law Enforcement Center at 130 Justice Center Drive in Reidsville. It opened in 2010, operates at all hours, and has capacity for 232 people. The county reports more than 50 full- and part-time officers. Computerized inmate and property records support the custody trail, while transports to court and prison explain why a person's absence cannot be treated as a community release without checking the destination.
The county's published budget adds an important local detail: some arrestees complete booking and are released before they enter the jail population. A current-custody view, even if one were later published, would miss some brief booking events. The booking record, release entry, and court file are therefore more durable than any snapshot of who is housed at one moment.
The source view shows how the county presents the facility and its operations. The Rockingham County Detention Center source is the official lead for facility details.

The image documents the county source, while a person-specific release still requires a call or targeted record request.
Which Rockingham Facility Released Them?
Rockingham has several similar correctional names, but they do not describe the same system. The current county jail dates to 2010. The former state Rockingham Correctional Center closed in September 1996. It should not be treated as an active prison or as another name for the county detention center. Dan River Prison Work Farm is in Caswell County, not Rockingham County.
A newer Rockingham Youth Development Center is a juvenile facility. Its records are not an adult released-inmate source and are generally confidential. Confirm the agency and age jurisdiction before searching. The county jail is run by the Sheriff, state adult prison records belong to NCDAC, and juvenile custody follows a separate protected system. This name check prevents an old prison result or juvenile reference from being attached to a current adult booking.
The Museum and Archives of Rockingham County also documents a 1910 jail near the historic courthouse. That older building adds another name and place to local searches, but it is not the source for a current adult release. Use the event date and operator to rule out historical references. For a present-day booking, the active Sheriff facility at the Justice Center and its computerized custody record control.
- County detention center
- The active adult jail for pending cases and short misdemeanor terms.
- Rockingham Correctional Center
- A former state prison that closed in 1996.
- Youth Development Center
- A separate juvenile facility, not an adult release-record channel.
Note: Match the operator as well as the facility name before interpreting a release date, status, or records response.

Be precise about the question. “Is the person still there?” is different from “When did the person leave, under what authority, and where did custody go next?” The second form produces the facts needed to distinguish release from transfer.
If the answer names NCDAC, compare the county booking number and court case with the state offender number. If it names another jail, contact that jail. A USMS or ICE destination calls for the relevant federal trail. When the record instead shows bond, dismissal, or sentence completion with no receiving agency, the court file can explain the legal authority while the jail timestamp confirms the physical exit.
